Manchester United icon Peter Schmeichel has predicted where his former club will finish in the Premier League this season.

United in improved form

United finally seem to be on the right track following a patchy start to the campaign. Ruben Amorim endured a tough time at Old Trafford since his arrival as Erik ten Hag’s replacement in November last year.

He led United to a lowly 15th-placed finish last term and also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

As he sought to implement his controversial 3-4-2-1 system, results and performances deteriorated. Matters worsened with United’s woeful start to 2025/26, but the current picture is decidedly more optimistic.

The Red Devils have lost just two of their last 12 Premier League fixtures.

Their most recent result, a 1-0 win over Newcastle, temporarily put them in fifth. Heading into Tuesday evening’s meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers, United are in sixth.

Schmeichel spoke on ViaPlay and expressed confidence that United will finish a lot higher than they did last season.

Schmeichel’s prediction

The former goalkeeper said [as quoted by Metro], “I think fifth or sixth. Fifth is good, but they’re fighting with another couple of clubs that are doing quite well.”

“But I think that’s the level that Manchester United are at.”

Schmeichel added, “With the signings of [Matheus] Cunha and [Bryan] Mbeumo they should be able to do fifth or sixth.”

Asked whether he would be pleased with fifth or sixth, the Dane answered, “If fifth gives access to the Champions League I’d be delighted.”

United vs. Wolves will kick off at 8:15 p.m. GMT.
