Midfielder committed future to Red Devils with new contract this week
Michael Carrick is sweating over the fitness of Luke Shaw and Matheus Cunha as Manchester United gear up to host Liverpool this weekend.
United are within touching distance of qualifying for Europe next season, and can confirm a Champions League place should they get the better of Arne Slot’s Reds at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
But Carrick will not have a full complement at his disposal for this crunch fixture after picking up a pair of fresh injury worries in last week’s defeat of Brentford.
Cunha did not make the matchday squad as he dealt with a sore hip flexor, while Shaw was hooked in the second-half with what appeared to be a muscular injury.
Speaking on Friday, Carrick revealed he was optimistic the pair could feature against long-time rivals Liverpool.
“We are in good shape, really,” he told reporters. “Matheus [Cunha] has done a little bit of work, so we are hopeful.

“With Luke [Shaw], we aren't sure if he will be ready, but we are hopeful.”
He continued, confirming that Matthijs de Ligt will remain sidelined as he struggles to recover from a lower-back injury picked up in November.
The Dutchman was pictured in training last week, but is not yet match fit.
Carrick added: “Matthijs [de Ligt] is still a little bit further, he won't be involved in the game. Other than that, we are in good shape.”
There was positive news for United this week as Kobbie Mainoo’s new contract was confirmed, tying him to Old Trafford until 2031.
Reflecting on the 21-year-old’s decision to extend his United deal, Carrick enthused: “I've been hugely impressed with him since I've been here. I've known him for quite some time, in different capacities, so I've certainly been aware of him for a long time.
“He epitomises this football club. He is a young player who has come through the academy, is living and breathing the club, and has come through with real talent.
“The natural thing for him was to sign a new contract so everyone is over the moon with it, including me because I think he deserves it.”
