Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Jonathan Tah.

Leverkusen are facing a fight to keep hold of their manager Xabi Alonso and playmaker Florian Wirtz. Both are attracting interest from Europe’s biggest clubs and might depart BayArena ahead of next season.

However, there’s no uncertainty when it comes to Tah’s future in Leverkusen heading into the summer, as the German defender has already confirmed he is leaving the Bundesliga giants.

Following Leverkusen’s 1-1 draw against St. Pauli earlier this month, the title-winning centre-back said (via ESPN): “I don’t have a timeframe [on my departure], but the club knows about it.

“There was a point when I made the decision not to extend my contract and not to stay here and that’s how it’s going now.”

The 29-year-old star is set to be available as a free agent, sparking interest from a number of top clubs.

According to Sky Sports broadcaster Paul Gilmour, United are “actively” considering signing Tah in the summer.

The Mancunians are set to part ways with both Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans at the end of the season. As such, Ruben Amorim would need at least one new central defender to rejuvenate his backline.

Tah is dominant in the air and composed with the ball at his feet. Further, the Germany international has shown he is very comfortable in a back three, having established himself as a key part of Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 system.

The arrival of a quality defender like Tah on a free transfer would also allow United to allocate transfer funds elsewhere. INEOS are determined to add more firepower to Amorim’s attack in the summer.

However, the Red Devils face competition from Real Madrid, who are being viewed as strong contenders as they could appoint Alonso as their next manager.

Bayern Munich and Barcelona are also keeping an eye on the situation but the latter face financial concerns.
