Manchester United and Tom Heaton have reportedly come to a verbal agreement on a new deal that will keep him at the club for another year.
Heaton was largely expected to leave United at the end of the 2024/25 campaign upon the expiry of his contract.
There were even suggestions that he and Jonny Evans would retire and possibly be offered coaching roles at United.
However, in a shocking twist, it emerged that the veteran goalkeeper was in talks over fresh terms.
On Monday, United confirmed that negotiations with Heaton were indeed going on, as they released an official squad update.
In that announcement, United noted that Evans, Victor Lindelof, Christian Eriksen and six academy stars would all be leaving when their deals expire on June 30.
Now, The Sun claim that a verbal agreement has been reached for Heaton to stay at United at least until the end of next season.
The newspaper reports fresh terms will be “finalised in the coming days.”
This will mean Heaton, who is in his second spell at Old Trafford, having rejoined in 2021, will remain a professional player into his forties.
Heaton came through the ranks in United’s youth system but left in 2010 without making a first-team appearance.
He has still not played a single minute of Premier League action for the Red Devils since his return.
The Sun add that a coaching role for him remains an option, but in the long-term future. For now, he will continue being part of the goalkeeping department.
