Ratcliffe visited United’s training ground to hold talks with Amorim and was expected to discuss the club’s dismal form.

Amorim is not thought to be in danger of the sack despite taking just four points from his first four Premier League matches and being dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Grimsby Town.

The Portuguese is under intense pressure as United continue to struggle, but insisted it was simply a “normal meeting”.

Asked what the pair discussed, Amorim joked: “He was offering me a new contract!

“No, it was normal things, just to show the support, explaining that it's a long project. He said many times this is my first season.

“I spoke with him, Omarr (Berrada), Jason (Wilcox), just trying to see the data around the team. It was a normal meeting, and we had several, but in this moment, it is normal people pay attention to that.”

Amorim suffered another embarrassing loss as his United side were beaten 3-0 in the Manchester derby last weekend.

Reflecting on the club’s form, he reiterated that his team was improving and that wins would soon come.

He continued: “Guys, this is football, and this is the club with more pressure in the world. We want to win.

“I think we are playing well until the boxes. Defending and attacking, we need to be more aggressive in the boxes, we need to be more clinical.

“The rest, I think we are improving and compared to last year, I think we are in a better place. We need to win. We lost against Arsenal and we lost against City.

“Here, losing, especially in the beginning after last season, is a problem.”

Man United host Chelsea this weekend as Amorim looks to claim just a second League win of the season.
