Manchester United have sacked Erik ten Hag as manager following the club’s disappointing start to the season.

The Red Devils sit 14th in the Premier League table after nine games, following Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium.

Ten Hag has overseen the club’s worst start to a season in the Premier League era, with United having scored just eight goals in their nine games this season.

Their poor start to the campaign comes after missing out on Champions League qualification in 2023/24 and a decision has been made to relieve the Dutchman of his duties.

United have won just four of their 13 games across all competitions so far this season, despite investing more than £200m on new signings in the summer transfer window.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will take over the team on an interim basis and will take charge for the first time during Wednesday’s League Cup tie with Leicester.

“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager,” a club statement read.

“Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”
