Ederson has been called up just six days before Brazil’s first group stage match

Manchester United will have to wait to confirm the signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson after he earned a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad.

The Red Devils have reportedly sealed a deal for the 26-year-old Brazilian as Michael Carrick looks to overhaul his squad ahead of the new Premier League season, which will also see his side return to the Champions League.

He had initially been left out of Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad after a dip in his Atalanta form, but an injury to Wesley in Brazil’s final pre-tournament friendly has opened the door for him to rejoin the national team.

The 22-year-old Roma defender Wesley hobbled off just 15 minutes into Brazil’s 2-1 defeat of Egypt on Saturday night, and Ancelotti later revealed he had suffered a muscular problem.

He went for tests post-match, and the Brazilian Football Confederation have now confirmed he has been released from the World Cup squad with an adductor injury.

The versatile Ederson has been called up to fill his place. He is due to join up with the Selecao on Monday.

This throws a spanner in the works for United, who were hoping to complete their move for the player in short order. According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, they will now have to wait until July to get the purchase over the line.

It remains to be seen how prominent a role Ederson will play at the tournament, where Brazil will face Morocco, Scotland and Haiti in the group stage. He has just three senior international caps to his name, and last appeared for his nation when he made a seven-minute cameo in a 4-1 defeat by Argentina in March.
