In a recent post on X, journalist Ben Jacobs stated that Manchester United wanted to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher on loan. However, the Red Devils failed in their attempts to sign the English talent after the Spanish club rejected their move as they were only willing to sanction his permanent departure this summer.
Gallagher enjoyed a decent run of form at the Madrid club in the previous campaign when he put in a series of impressive displays at the heart of their midfield. The English midfield ace featured in 50 matches for Atletico Madrid last season, scoring four goals and picking up six assists in multiple competitions.
The 25-year-old anchored the midfield with conviction as he made 45 tackles, 23 blocks and 20 interceptions in La Liga. He has even distributed the ball relatively well after completing 85% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via fbref.com).
His current contract at the Wanda Metropolitano will expire in the summer of 2029. Thus, Man United would have to make a big offer if they want to sign Gallagher next year.

Gallagher is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team at the centre of the park. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when required and is a good passer of the ball as well.
The English talent can chip in by scoring and creating his fair share of goals from midfield. He has got plenty of experience in the Premier League and won’t take much time to adjust to life at Man United if they decide to move in for him in the future.
Gallagher would no doubt enhance the quality of Ruben Amorim’s first XI. He is good enough to earn regular first-team football at Old Trafford in the coming seasons.
At 25, Gallagher has his best years ahead of him, which makes him a worthy target for the Red Devils to pursue next year. All in all, Amorim would be wise to go back in for Gallagher when the transfer window reopens this January.
