Manchester United have plans to go big in their bid to recruit in midfield in the summer transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Man United have announced that Casemiro is leaving the Old Trafford club at the end of the season, and the Red Devils are identifying prospective key targets ahead of the next transfer window.

However, Romano claims Bayern Munich star Leon Goretzka is not currently on their radar despite some reports linking him with Man United.

The German is out of contract at the end of the season and will not be short of suitors when he becomes a free agent.

Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson have all been linked with Man United.

While the Italian journalist did not mention any of them in his transfer update on YouTube today, the club are expected to go after at least one of them.

“Leon Goretzka will leave Bayern Munich as a free agent this summer and will have plenty of options,” Romano said.

“My understanding is that Manchester United will go very big for midfielders in summer – trust me, very big. They could sign one or maybe two midfielders, Man United will go very strong for midfielders, Casemiro is leaving, but at the moment, I am not aware of anything advanced for Goretzka.”

Whoever is the manager heading into next season will determine which midfielders will be signed, and Michael Carrick will hope to do enough to earn a permanent deal after replacing Ruben Amorim until the end of the season.

The Red Devils are now expected to hold on to Kobbie Mainoo after Carrick brought him back into the starting XI, which could see them go for just one midfielder in the summer.

Manuel Ugarte could also follow Casemiro out of Man United after his constant struggles and failure to impress, and the Red Devils could look to promote one of their academy stars in the position to the first-team.
