Striker a doubt for season finale as Bruno Fernandes chases assists record

Benjamin Sesko remains a doubt as Manchester United visit Brighton in their final match of the Premier League season.

The Slovenian striker has been absent since being hooked at half-time of this month’s defeat of Liverpool, when he collided awkwardly with the advertising hoardings and aggravated a pre-existing shin injury.

He has missed two matches since and Michael Carrick has confirmed he remains a doubt as United head to the AmEx for their final match of the season.

Given United have little riding on this match, that is no great setback - Carrick was expected to rotate anyway.

Should Sesko fail to make the trip south, Bryan Mbeumo would be the most likely candidate to start up top, vacating his place on the wing for Patrick Dorgu to make a first start since suffering a hamstring injury in January.

Bruno Fernandes, of course, will start in the No10 role as he chases a record 21st assist of the Premier League season.

Casemiro will not be involved in this match having already left the club, with Manuel Ugarte the most likely candidate to replace him in defensive midfield alongside Kobbie Mainoo.

Carrick has plenty of scope to shake things up at the back. Senne Lammens has been his mainstay in goal, but he may give Altay Bayindir the nod between the sticks so he can make one last appearance before an anticipated summer transfer.

Across the back four, this is a ripe opportunity for Ayden Heaven to gain more Premier League experience, perhaps replacing Harry Maguire in central defence. Noussair Mazraoui could also be called upon at full-back.

Matthijs de Ligt remains unavailable after undergoing surgery on a back injury.

Carrick watched on earlier this month as United’s Under-18s won the FA Youth Cup, and he may well opt to give some academy talent their debuts against Brighton, but they will most likely come off the bench.

Manchester United XI: Bayindir; Shaw, Heaven, Martinez, Mazraoui; Mainoo, Ugarte; Dorgu, Fernandes, Cunha; Mbeumo

Doubts: Sesko (shin)

Injured: De Ligt (back)

Unavailable: Casemiro
