The Maracanã consortium run by Flamengo and Fluminense has been fined over adult-content adverts shown during Campeonato Carioca matches, including the final. According to Coluna Do Fla, the penalties total R$ 877,000 and are to be shared with the Rio federation and a sponsoring company.
The sanctions were imposed by the Secretaria de Estado de Defesa do Consumidor and Procon-RJ. The authorities deemed the adverts inappropriate for a venue frequented by families, children and adolescents.
The Maracanã must pay R$ 123,482.61, while FERJ and Fatal Model have been fined R$ 377,220.00 each.
Rogério Pimenta, the state consumer protection secretary, said stadiums are collective spaces for families, and the law forbids such content at these venues. He added that the Secretariat works to ensure the law is followed and to protect children and adolescents.
The consortium, FERJ and Fatal Model can appeal within the legal timeframe. If the penalties are upheld and the parties choose not to pay, the sums could be registered as overdue debt.
On Thursday 16, the Maracanã will host Flamengo v Independiente Medellín (COL) in the second round of Copa Libertadores Group A. Kick-off is 21:30 Brasília time, with more than 50,000 expected.
