Marc Skinner gives verdict on Manchester United penalty shout against Arsenal in League Cup semi-final | OneFootball

Marc Skinner said that Manchester United should have had a penalty in their Subway Women’s League Cup semi-final win against Arsenal.

Elisabeth Terland scored the only goal of the game in first-half additional time – but a few minutes previously she had called for a penalty after a challenge from Katie McCabe.

And the head coach thought it should have been awarded.

“Should be a penalty no doubt and I think that gives you that balance because you’re controlling the game [going into half-time],” Skinner told United’s official video channel.

Regardless, he was delighted with what he called a “smart finish” from Terland – and admitted that Arsenal were a tough prospect even when reduced to ten players after Olivia Smith’s second-half sending-off.

“When they go down to ten players, always difficult. Do we stick, do we twist? They’ve got nothing to lose so they come out, but if you’re going to come against a team and try and attack a team like Manchester United, like us, you’re always going to find it difficult.”

Noting that he had been told it was his 150th game in charge of the team, he was pleased to be able to mark the occasion by reaching the league cup final for the first time ever.

“To do it in the way that we have, not that it’s ever about me, but actually seeing the team do that, it’s a really proud moment, I’m happy with the team spirit.”

And he added: “We’ve got the hardest of challenges, Chelsea of course, in the final, but it’s a final and we’ll go and give it our absolute all.

“Our fans were magnificent tonight, in the pouring-down rain to travel to London. They deserve that. I’m so happy that we can keep creating history for them.”
