Manchester United Women’s season has begun to unravel somewhat.
The Red Devils have made history in their first ever Champions League campaign.
They impressively won four matches out of six, including victories against Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.
Marc Skinner’s side also comfortably defeated Atletico Madrid 5-0 on aggregate in the knockout phase. They did lose 2-3 to Bayern Munich in the first leg of the quarter-final, though.
United also reached their first ever League Cup final but were unfortunately beaten 2-0 by Chelsea. They were also knocked out of the FA Cup by the same side in February.
The women’s side have also found themselves competing near the top of the table, but they have stalled recently and have fallen out of the Champions League places to fourth place with three fixtures remaining.
The Red Devils did invest in their team in January through the signings of Swede Hanna Lundkvist, Lea Schuller and Ellen Wangerheim.
Nonetheless, injuries have piled up and taken their toll on the young side.
Skinner has frequently claimed that his side lack options and will need another big summer of transfers to compete next season on all fronts.
Despite his achievements as head coach, there are cracks beginning to appear in the relationship between United and Skinner.
Journalist Sully reports that, “Skinner is under serious review by Man United officials with some of the hierarchy unhappy with the poor performances.”
This includes only one win since the 19th of February, and even that particular victory required a 94th-minute strike by Melvine Malard against Everton.
Sully also states that there is “some concern from players too. Nothing imminent is planned but Champions League qualification is seen as crucial for next season.”
United will face Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, looking to overturn the first leg deficit.
