Manchester City have confirmed that goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli has agreed a one-year extension to his current deal, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2027.
The 33-year-old joined the Sky Blues last summer following the expiration of his contract at Chelsea, arriving as a replacement for the departing Scott Carson – who had long acted as the club’s third-choice goalkeeper.
While Bettinelli is yet to make his competitive debut for the club, his role behind the scenes has proven invaluable during a period of immense transition for Pep Guardiola’s goalkeeping department.
Since Bettinelli’s arrival, the club has seen the departures of long-term stalwarts Ederson and Stefan Ortega, with the club successfully recruiting Italian international Gianluigi Donnarumma and re-signing James Trafford from Burnley.
Amidst this high-level reshuffle, Bettinelli has established himself as a key cultural figure within the dressing room, providing a bridge of experience for the club’s younger shot-stoppers.
“It’s a great feeling knowing I’ll be at Manchester City for another season. It’s a real privilege to be here and I’m learning so much every day,” said Bettinelli following the announcement.
The former Fulham and Middlesbrough man continued, “The staff have been superb – I have felt really supported since day one.
“My job is to be the best I can be, push our other goalkeepers and ensure that, as a group, we are improving. I think we are definitely doing that.”
Director of Football Hugo Viana reacted, “Marcus has been a really good signing for us.
“He’s brought ideas and energy to our goalkeeping department and we are delighted he is staying for longer. It’s vital for any top club to have a thriving goalkeeping department and Marcus is a big part of ours.”
The decision to trigger Marcus Bettinelli’s extension comes at a strategic moment for Hugo Viana, with James Trafford attracting significant interest from Newcastle United and Tottenham ahead of the summer.

From the club’s perspective, securing Bettinelli’s future ensures that Manchester City maintain veteran continuity regardless of potential movement among the backup ranks.
As Manchester City head into the final weeks of the 2025/26 campaign – chasing a historic domestic cup double and a high-stakes title decider against Arsenal – the stability of the training ground environment is paramount.
Marcus Bettinelli’s new deal is a clear signal that the club values the Scott Carson-esque leadership he provides, ensuring the goalkeeping union remains a pillar of strength during Pep Guardiola’s quest for further silverware.
