Mario Domínguez and Víctor Jr. close in on Mestalla records

Valencia Mestalla have revived under Óscar Sánchez with three wins in four and a prolific scoring rate. According to Superdeporte, Mario Domínguez and Víctor Jr. are each one goal from club records at Segunda B and Segunda RFEF level.

Domínguez has 15 this season, one short of becoming Mestalla’s top single-season scorer of the 21st century at those tiers. In 19 seasons no striker has bettered that mark.

He is level on 15 with Rafa Mir in 2017/18 and Aridai Cabrera in 2016/17, one ahead of Rafa Chumbi in 2013/14 and three clear of Paco Alcácer in 2011/12. The Torrent-born forward hit 26 in Tercera División, a tier with the same number of levels as today’s Segunda RFEF but of lower standard before the restructure.

Víctor Jr. has 11, leaving him one away from becoming the 21st century’s highest scoring midfielder for Mestalla at those levels. Both Hugo González in 2023/24 and Míchel Herrero in 2008/09 also scored 11. Unlike those two, who debuted for the first team that year, Víctor Jr. has not even been called up.

Two matches remain and the record chase is alive for both. Mario Domínguez is out of contract and the club have not contacted him to renew. Valencia will pay Levante the €100,000 purchase option after his season, which is expected to at least give Víctor Jr. a pre-season chance with the seniors.
