Tottenham head coach Martin Ho has praised his squad’s effort and insisted his side have taken a ‘big step forward’ after their latest victory over Leicester City.
Spurs bounced back after their heavy defeat to Manchester City with a 2-1 win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.
Two first-half goals from Cathinka Tandberg and Olivia Holdt set the tone for a controlled opening 45 minutes before a tired but resilient second-half display secured all three points. The result moves Spurs up to fourth in the Women’s Super League while Leicester are in eighth.
Martin Ho stressed the importance of collective effort after Tottenham took a 2-1 victory over Leicester City.
“I’ve said this to the players. It shows big character as a group collectively and not just the players on the pitch but maybe the players who didn’t come in too.
“It’s a squad effort to get to this point and I think when you’re not at your best and you can still take points from the game and we can defend the way we did in the second half I think it’s a sign of a good team going in the right direction. Maybe previously we might not have been in that place but I think we’ve now taken a big step forward.”
With nine points from four games Spurs are well placed. Ho summed up: “Definitely. I think it’s a really good start from us.
“We’ve put ourselves in a really good position and given ourselves a good platform. Now we have to make sure we maintain that and keep looking to win games, keep pushing in games, try and evolve as a team in terms of how we want to play. That takes a bit of time but I think the character shown by the players today – I couldn’t be prouder.”
Tottenham boss Ho also reflected on Holdt’s key goal. “I think you get the first one and it probably settles a few nerves and then the second one comes from Evaliina (Summanen) plays through for Olivia and she puts it over the keeper.
Ho believes the Denmark international is starting to show her full potential.
He said: “I think we know the quality that Olivia has and we know the talent that she possesses. It’s more her showing that and I think she’s getting fitter and fitter now after her difficult start since coming to the club and we’re seeing that more often. She’s in a good space and she’s doing well we’ve just got to keep building on it. There’s still a lot more to come from her but we have to make sure that we stay in control for a lot longer in these games.”
Tottenham’s next challenge will be to extend their bright start and sustain control for longer periods. With Tandberg already scoring on her debut and Holdt rediscovering her form the signs are encouraging. If the squad can sharpen their second half displays they may well turn a promising opening month into a sustained push near the top of the table.
