Anthony Taylor has been appointed into the role of match referee for this weekend’s high-profile clash between Manchester City and Manchester United.

Pep Guardiola and his players will be desperate to kick-off their competitive duties once more this season with a victory, having succumbed to consecutive defeats in their last two outings preceding the September international break.

Having started the new season in fine fashion with a dominant 0-4 win on the road away to Wolves, featuring an Erling Haaland brace and goals from debutants Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki, a home bow against Tottenham would end in a 0-2 loss.

Then followed another loss, as Manchester City looked to bounce back with a contest against Brighton on the south coast. Having taken the lead, the visitors failed to capitalise on first-half chances, and threw away two goals to lose 2-1 at the Amex Stadium.

Ruben Amorim’s side will also be desperate for a positive performance after a difficult start to the new season that has featured a League Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, as such making City’s challenge far from easy this weekend.

Now, ahead of the meeting between Manchester City and Manchester United, the Premier League have now announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at the Etihad Stadium!

Match Referee

The Premier League have confirmed that highly-experienced top-flight referee Anthony Taylor has been appointed into the lead role in the middle for this weekend’s Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.

The Manchester-born official has taken charge of 47 City matches in his officiating career, with the Sky Blues coming out on top in 25 of those fixtures, drawing 10 matches, and losing on 12 occasions.

Taylor has also taken charge of four meetings between Manchester City and Manchester United since his first appointment to the contest in the 2018/19 season, with the former winning just one of those games.

Assistant Referees

Appointed into the roles of assistant referees at the Etihad Stadium this weekend will be the pairing of Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn – long-standing colleagues on the pitch of Anthony Taylor.

Video Assistant Referees

Overseeing proceedings in the Manchester derby from the VAR Hub at Stockley Park this weekend will be John Brooks – in the role of Video Assistant Referee – and Neil Davies, appointed as Assistant Video Assistant Referee.

Fourth Official

Standing between the two dugouts at the Etihad Stadium and monitoring events involving Pep Guardiola and Ruben Amorim’s actions will be the appointed fourth official for the match in Simon Hooper.
