Liverpool reaction: David Lynch explains why Leeds defeat should not overshadow first half promise

Liverpool’s 4-2 pre season defeat against Leeds United created plenty of debate, but David Lynch believes the reaction needs to be judged with a sense of perspective.

The result exposed some concerns around squad depth, particularly when Liverpool’s second string players were stretched, but the performance also provided significant encouragement during an excellent first half.

Speaking on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, David Lynch joined Dave Davis to analyse Liverpool’s defeat and argued that supporters should not allow the disappointing second half to completely erase the positives shown by Andoni Iraola’s side.

Liverpool impress before second half collapse

Liverpool looked dominant during the opening 45 minutes in Chicago, taking a 2-0 lead into half time and producing the type of aggressive football expected under Iraola.

Lynch was particularly impressed by the intensity, pressing and attacking structure Liverpool displayed.

“I thought they were brilliant in the first half. Absolutely brilliant,” Lynch told Dave Davis.

He explained that the performance demonstrated why Liverpool made a managerial change during the summer.

“This is kind of exactly why you make the change in the dugout over the summer because you need to get back to this type of football. It’s more in line with what Liverpool should be doing.”

Liverpool’s attacking play and ability to force mistakes from Leeds were among the biggest positives, with Lynch praising the way the team controlled proceedings.

“Very aggressive, front-footed, Leeds couldn’t get out their own half. And then the attacking play, some of that so slick as well.”

The second half told a very different story, with Leeds scoring four unanswered goals after Liverpool made significant changes.

While Lynch accepted there were areas Liverpool need to improve, he argued the circumstances behind the collapse were important.

“I honestly can’t believe the scale of the head loss,” Lynch said when discussing the reaction from some supporters.

The Liverpool journalist highlighted the weakened team that finished the match, explaining that several players involved would not realistically feature together during the Premier League season.

“This for me was the most pronounced version we’ve seen of kind of a first half 11 into a second half 11. A real big change and drop off in quality.”

Lynch pointed towards the final stages of the game as a key factor, rather than viewing the full match as a reflection of Liverpool’s likely level.

“That 11 when three of the goals are conceded, that’s an absolutely awful 11 that won’t be on the pitch at any point in a Liverpool game this season.”

Liverpool still need reinforcements before season starts

Despite defending the context around the defeat, Lynch agreed that Liverpool require further additions before the transfer window closes.

The defeat reinforced concerns around squad depth, especially in defensive areas, while Liverpool continue to work on improving Iraola’s options.

“You absolutely need signings. I don’t think there’s any debate around that,” Lynch said.

However, Lynch believes the main takeaway should be the difference between Liverpool’s strongest available team and the heavily rotated side that struggled against Leeds.

“I’m much more focused on what I saw in the first half because I thought that was brilliant.”

For Liverpool, the defeat provided a useful reminder ahead of the new campaign. Iraola’s side showed signs of the football identity the club wants to build, but the drop off in quality when changes were made demonstrated why recruitment remains important.

The final weeks of the transfer window will determine whether Liverpool can turn those promising performances into a squad capable of sustaining that level across an entire season.
