Match report clears confusion, Charles to miss fewer Corinthians games

Corinthians was defeated by Red Bull Bragantino in the 32nd round of the Brasileirão, but the spotlight of the match ended up on the refereeing. One of the controversial moments involved midfielder Charles, who was sent off for assaulting an opponent in stoppage time.

Charles slapped Jhon Jhon, the attacking midfielder for Massa Bruta, with his right hand, initially receiving a yellow card from Edina Alves Batista. Shortly after, he was sent off, without the referee signaling the cancellation of the first card shown. If this had stood, he would have had to serve a two-game suspension, as he was already on a yellow card warning.

In the match report released after the game, the head referee stated that only a red card was shown. Thus, he will serve a suspension against Ceará for the sending-off, and will return to face São Paulo on the 20th, still at risk due to the number of yellow cards received.

VAR, Rodrigo Guarizo do Amaral, reviewed the incident from the beginning, when the confusion was still between Charles and Vanderlan. After that, Charles assaulted the Bragantino player, which was confirmed by the video referee, without Edina going to the booth to review the play.

“He pushes. Here it’s a slap on the arm, not a punch; a push on the shoulder. The slap was on the shoulder in the first action,” noted the VAR about the first incident, between Charles and Vanderlan.

“He slapped, but I don’t know if he hit, or did he pretend to hit?” Edina asked about the second conflict, now between Charles and Jhon Jhon.

“He does slap, yes, on the opponent’s face. Number 35 slaps him in the face,” said Rodrigo. “I see the slap from 35, but I don’t know if it lands. Was it a red, Fabrini (assistant)? He’s the blond one,” Edina asked again.

“Edina, check confirmed, number 35 delivers a slap to the opponent’s face,” confirmed the video referee.
