Matheus Cunha addition is exactly what Man United need, here’s why – analysis

It’s simple. The Manchester United attack hasn’t been anywhere near good enough this season.

Since Ruben Amorim has taken over, fans could see the potential of his style of play. On the whole, the final product just looks far from happening. Consistently being able to put the ball in the back of the net just doesn’t appear that it can happen on a regular basis.

United found a way to score the needed goals against Lyon and AFC Bournemouth. This came after red cards gave Amorim’s side a man advantage in both instances. It should go without saying, the club can’t depend on an expulsion in order to grind out late results.

In comes the latest update from Fabrizio Romano. As shared on X, Matheus Cunha is finalizing the final details for his upcoming move from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Man Utd. Despite the recent history of signings that haven’t worked out and ended up being overpriced, this would be something that would be universally welcomed by supporters.

Even at a high price, the Brazilian is an ideal fit in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system. With Wolves, he plays in the forward role and knows how to create and finish attacks with a goal at the end. Either with a well-placed shot himself or a clever final pass, Cunha knows how to put the opposing net under threat throughout the full 90 minutes.

Thinking ahead, pairing him with Bruno Fernandes will be a lethal combination in the Premier League. The Brazil international is individually brilliant. He knows how to drift back into the midfield and time his involvement more in the centre of the park. When his team has possession, he possesses the traditional striker instincts to be in the right place. In the final third, he then makes sure that the chances do not go to waste.

Fernandes has been incredible during the 2024-2025 season. It is a completely unreasonable expectation to ask him to repeat his effort and work rate for the entirety of the upcoming season. He has delivered and exceeded above what’s asked of a midfielder. In any other squad, his assists in particular would have seen a noticeable uptick.

Ultimate Man Utd pairing that will produce results

Now with Cunha about to enter the roster, the Portuguese captain will have someone else to work off. More importantly, it will allow Fernandes to not need to put up a Herculean effort. His great play has only led to a dismal EPL showing and early cup exits. While he is playing at a high level, Man Utd need to take advantage of the skipper’s form and capitalize.

This addition will be a step in the right direction. What’s nice is that even with the gap between the Reds and the top point getters, there should be plenty of opportunity in the following seasons to compete for a title again. Liverpool is coming off their clinching win against Tottenham. They, too, are a side that looks vulnerable at times. LFC can be susceptible to any club simply getting their act together.

Cunha coming to Man Utd wouldn’t be the final missing piece to turn things around. From the available moves and a clear area of need, it would be an excellent start for the upcoming summer to best position Amorim and give the boss a clean slate to work with.
