Matheus Cunha has suggested he will leave Wolves this summer, as he targets “the next step” in his career.

The 25-year-old has been suspended since the start of March after he was sent off against Bournemouth and will not return until mid-April, but he has still enjoyed a hugely productive season.

Cunha has scored 13 goals in the Premier League and assisted another four, leading to significant speculation over his future in January.

Arsenal were among the clubs strongly linked with the Brazilian, but he stayed at Wolves and then signed a new contract at the club through to 2029.

However, it is believed that a release clause of around £62.5million was included in the new deal and Cunha has made it clear that although he did not want to leave Wolves mid-season while they were in a relegation fight, he is already eyeing a summer move.

“I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it,” Cunha told The Observer of January interest in him.

“Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.

“Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”

Wolves sit 17th in the table but are nine points clear of the drop zone, with an upturn in form under Vitor Pereira likely to be enough to keep them up.

Whether Arsenal will act on their previous interest in Cunha this summer remains to be seen, with the Gunners also said to be tracking the likes of Alexander Isak, Benjamin Sesko and Nico Williams.

Cunha scored his first goal for Brazil over the international break, getting on the scoresheet in his country’s 4-1 defeat to Argentina.
