Matheus Pereira of Corinthians, who face Flamengo next in the Brasileirão, denounced artificial pitches after a match against Chapecoense.
"Synthetic pitches are no good, it is very difficult to play on them, they are very poor. Synthetic turf only increases the risk of injury for us players," he told Prime Video.
Flamengo are leading the push against artificial turf and have submitted a proposal to the CBF to standardise pitches across the country, aiming for a high-level standard.
Bap, Flamengo’s president, condemned synthetic surfaces, arguing some clubs install them to stage concerts and should focus on show business if that is their priority. He added that no concerts would take place at the Maracanã while he is in charge.
He said artificial pitches are unhealthy for players, questioned why the CBF allows them and why clubs seek to make money that way. He underlined Flamengo’s support for Financial and Sporting Fair Play, and said the club comply with all rules.
Série A currently has six stadiums with artificial turf, namely Allianz Parque, Arena Barueri, Arena Condá, Arena da Baixada, Arena MRV and Nilton Santos.
On Sunday 22, Flamengo visit Corinthians at the Neo Química Arena, which has a hybrid surface combining natural grass with about 4% stitched synthetic fibres. Kick-off is 20:30 Brasília time in the eighth round of the Brasileirão.
