Matías Almeyda’s Sevilla tenure has ended after a damaging run that leaves the side 15th in LaLiga, three points above the drop. A quiet January, featuring only Neal Maupay’s arrival, did little to steady the slide.
Sevilla have turned to Luis García Plaza, who has signed for the remainder of the campaign plus another season. According to Mundo Deportivo, Almeyda is already on Monterrey’s radar to take over following Nico Sánchez’s spell.
Just months ago, García Plaza described Sevilla as a sleeping giant constrained by financial issues. He argued the club must rebuild gradually and said he hoped it would return to the elite, adding he believed it could compete again to be Spain’s fourth force.
Almeyda’s exit was handled respectfully, aiding a smooth handover for the demanding run-in.
The potential move to Monterrey would carry a clear Sevilla flavour, with former Nervión players Lucas Ocampos, Óliver Torres, Tecatito Corona and Anthony Martial in the squad.
Focus now shifts to survival. With nine games left, García Plaza will aim to bank his first three points in the next league fixture and use the summer window to restore stability at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.
