Sunderland have been linked with Roma winger Matias Soule, with Fulham also interested, as the Black Cats target their first summer signing ahead of a maiden Europa League campaign.
According to Sunderland Echo, only exits have been confirmed so far, with Eliezer Mayenda joining Rennes and Dan Neil and Nazariy Rusyn moving to Rangers and Karpaty Lviv respectively. Regis Le Bris is intent on adding to his squad for what promises to be a landmark season.
Soule, 23, was born in Argentina and moved from Kimberley and Velez Sarsfield to Juventus’ academy in 2020. He debuted in Serie C for Juve’s Under-23s in August 2021 in a 2-1 win over Pergoletesse, then made his senior bow that November at Salernitana, later scoring his first top-flight goal against Sampdoria.
He totalled 21 Juventus first-team appearances, and shone on loan at Frosinone in 2023/24 with 11 goals and three assists. He joined Roma the following summer for a reported £24m and has 12 goals and 13 assists in 81 games across the last two seasons.
At international level he has not yet won a senior cap. He featured for Argentina’s youth teams, received a senior call-up for a 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Chile in September 2024 without playing, and was cut from the final 25-man World Cup squad in May after making the initial 55.
Soule signed a five-year contract at Roma in 2024, leaving three years to run, and is represented by Martin Ariel Guastadisegno, who also advises Real Betis defender Valentin Gomez. Asked about his future on returning for pre-season, he said, “Will I stay? Honestly, I don’t know.” Tentative enquiries over his availability have been mooted, his agent is thought to have travelled to England to meet Sunderland and Fulham, and Roma are said to want about £30m.
