Matt Doherty has left Wolves after 13 years and 389 appearances, departing as a free agent. According to ExpressAndStar.com, the Irishman, 34, was not offered a new deal and ranks 16th on the club’s all-time appearance list.

Signed from Bohemians for £75,000 in 2010, he helped take Wolves from League One to the Europa League. As a wing-back, he returned 33 goals and 41 assists across two spells.

A standout came in the 2-1 win at Newcastle on December 9, 2018, when Diogo Jota’s surge forced a save and Doherty headed a 94th-minute winner at the back post.

He also struck in the FA Cup semi-final against Watford at Wembley on April 7, 2019, a trademark far-post header from a short-corner cross, before Wolves’ 2-0 lead slipped away in a late collapse that denied them the final.

Across that first Premier League season back, he scored eight and provided 10 assists, underlining his influence.

The following campaign brought involvement in another 12 goals and a dramatic night against Manchester City on December 27, 2019. After Ederson was sent off and Raheem Sterling made it 2-0, Adama Traore scored then set up Raul Jimenez before Doherty’s left-footed 89th-minute winner after a one-two.

Beyond the highlights, his contribution carried weight on and off the pitch, and he was a model professional, liked and respected across the club.
