Maurice Louis-Dreyfus thanked Sunderland supporters after the club clinched Europa League qualification.

Sunderland returned to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs, with many expecting Régis Le Bris’ side to face a survival fight.

Instead they finished seventh, earning a top 10 place and the club’s first continental campaign since 1973-74.

The achievement prompted emotional scenes across Wearside as players, staff, supporters and members of the ownership group celebrated a historic finish.

He said in a post that staying up, making the top 10 and beating the “visitors” twice capped an unbelievable team effort. He thanked everyone involved and told fans the season’s finish was for them.

He described the post match moments as beautiful and said supporters deserved it. The “visitors” phrasing appeared to nod to Newcastle, with Sunderland completing a memorable derby double on their march into Europe.
