According to Nosso Palestra, Palmeiras midfielder Mauricio has gained Paraguayan nationality, with FIFA ratifying the decision on 9 February, and he could be called up for this year's World Cup in June and July in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

He could feature for Paraguay alongside two Palmeiras team-mates at the tournament.

His father holds Paraguayan nationality, which eased the process. The no 18 spent his adolescence in the country and had considered the switch for years.

Paraguay are in Group D with the United States, Australia and a team that will qualify via the play-off.

Palmeiras could be represented at the World Cup by Gustavo Gómez, Piquerez, Andreas Pereira, Emiliano Martínez, Maurício, Jhon Arias, Flaco López, Vitor Roque and Ramón Sosa.
