Mauricio has STJD ban reduced to warning and will not miss Palmeiras duty | OneFootball

Mauricio has had a one-match punishment turned into a warning by the STJD’s second commission for an incident with Cacá in Palmeiras’ rout of Vitória last Wednesday. He will not miss a game for the club.

According to Globo.com, the attacking midfielder was initially cited under article 254 of the CBJD for violent conduct, an offence carrying a ban of one to six games. Case rapporteur Luiz Gabriel Batista Neves backed the minimum penalty.

Prosecutor Marília Fontenele challenged public criticism surrounding the hearing. Palmeiras’ defence said it did not want to inflame matters and pointed out that the on-field decision, after the referee and VAR review, was a yellow card.

The club added that the CBF saw no obvious error, noting referee Alex Gomes Stefano, from Rio de Janeiro, was neither sanctioned nor stood down and was appointed for Copa do Brasil duty at the weekend. They argued Mauricio should not have been reported and should be cleared.

Neves then said it was clear Mauricio ought to have been sent off and that the officials should also have faced charges. He still upheld a one-game suspension converted to a warning.

After the 3-0 win over Fortaleza in the Copa do Brasil on Sunday, Mauricio said he did not intend to elbow his opponent and referenced his calm character.

Following the incident, Vitória had two players dismissed, Cacá for a violent challenge on Jhon Arias and Luan Cândido for making a robbery gesture. Both were later given one-game bans, with Cacá’s also converted to a warning. Club president Fábio Mota, who had questioned the refereeing after the match, was acquitted.
