Max Eberl questioned João Pinheiro’s handling of Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final with Paris Saint-Germain, hinting at preferential treatment for the French side’s Portuguese players after a 1-1 draw that sealed a 6-5 aggregate exit.

According to BuLi News, the Bayern board member for sport praised PSG for an outstanding performance but said several contentious calls influenced the tie. He added that Bayern may have made mistakes and suggested the referee might have done likewise, with fine margins deciding such occasions.

He focused on two first-half decisions, starting with the choice not to show Nuno Mendes a second yellow for handball, after Konrad Laimer was judged to have handled in the same passage. Eberl said a second booking could have been given and that the sudden change surprised many. He conceded he did not see Laimer’s handball, while the other incident looked clear to him.

Eberl was also struck by how communicative Pinheiro appeared with his compatriots from PSG, even accompanying them to corners, while he was not offered a clear explanation on the field.

He called the moment when Vitinha kicked the ball onto team-mate João Neves’s arm in the area strange, arguing many referees would have awarded a Bayern penalty. He said opinion was split on the call and that nobody had clarified the law for him, maintaining it was handball in his view.
