Inter Miami does not stop surprising in the MLS transfer market this time with the signing of Maximiliano Falcón, a Uruguayan center-back from Colo Colo. A $2 million deal that wasn't without its hurdles but seems to have been worth the effort, per journalist César Luis Merlo. At 27, Falcón comes in with the mission of strengthening the defense of a team led by Javier Mascherano, current Supporters' Shield champion.

Falcón didn’t hide how much he wanted this move. After learning about Inter Miami’s financial offer, he admitted to “putting pressure” on Colo Colo to sell him. The player even skipped training sessions to expedite negotiations, a move that drew criticism, including from former coach Claudio Borghi.

A trick as popular as it's been controversial proved to be. For Falcón, the idea of Inter Miami was one offer he could never let slip through. Let's be objective: he wouldn't be mistaken. The chance to feature in the MLS for a side with growing ambition, under someone like Mascherano, is rather too good an offer to refuse.

Inter Miami bet on Falcón because

Inter Miami are looking for defensive consistency, one that has become rather customary in a league where offense may be the more heralded attribute. Maximiliano Falcón comes in with attributes that will make him an important addition to the backline.

This Uruguayan player is a left-sided defender, and that adds versatility to the already erected backline. His recovery from not-so-easy situations, added to his good one-on-one skills, is what every coach wants in a defender. Furthermore, Falcón could build plays from the back because of his good passing and movement.

But what stands out the most is his competitive mentality. Falcón doesn't back down, and that on-field demeanor reflects a player who gives everything for his team. That intensity will be crucial for Inter Miami, especially in high-stakes games.

Javier Mascherano's vision

Most probably, the decision to get Falcón in is one of common sense with Javier Mascherano at the helm of affairs. A past center-back with an impeccable career, Mascherano certainly knows what to look for in a defender. His experience and tactical acumen will be priceless, and Falcão will have the opportunity to grow with one of the best minds in South American soccer at the helm.

This isn't Inter Miami signing just a player; they are incorporating an asset into the squad. One can expect nothing but an improvement on the strengths of Falcón as Mascherano makes him a cornerstone at the back of the squad.

Controversies aside, what to expect from Falcón

If mixed feelings are warranted with the way he handled his departure from Colo Colo, for now, Falcón has a chance to move forward. The attention at Inter Miami will be on what he does on the pitch.

His track record, however, suggests he's someone that rises to the occasion. Great at Colo Colo, and under criticism, he showed determination to see through the transfer. That same determination could turn out to be an important weapon for Inter Miami in high-pressure situations this season of the MLS.

Besides, with his defensive skills combined with his technical ability, he is just the right man for the kind of play Inter Miami want to introduce.
