Manchester City have been handed a clear message of intent from on-loan midfield talent Maximo Perrone this week while he discussed his future in the game.
The 22-year-old central midfielder is into his second successive season-long loan spell away from the Etihad Stadium after signing for Manchester City from Velez Sarsfield in the January transfer window of 2023.
Penning a five-and-a-half year contract with Pep Guardiola’s side for a transfer fee in the region of £8 million, and linking up after the conclusion of the 2023 South American Under-20 Championship, Perrone would go on to make his Premier League debut a month later.
Appearing as a second-half substitute in an eventual 1-4 away win for Manchester City against AFC Bournemouth in late February 2023, the summer would then bring about an agreement to send Perrone on a season-long switch to UD Las Palmas in Spain.
Upon returning ahead of the 2024/25 season, and after spending pre-season with Manchester City in the United States, the Etihad club then announced that Maximo Perrone would spent the season with Como in Serie A, who would hold an option for the loan to be extended.
And it now appears as though a desire for such a temporary agreement to be extended further is held by the midfielder himself, ahead of a decision being made in the upcoming summer market and at the end of the ongoing season.
Speaking with Calcio Line, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness, Perrone admitted a firm hope to remain with Como ahead of a summer when Manchester City will need to make a further decision over the player’s next steps in the game.
“There are agents, representatives, I don’t know anything. As far as I’m concerned, I want to stay here, grow and learn more with Como,” Perrone said.
He continued, “I want to give a hand to my teammates and I’m happy to stay with Cesc (Fabregas). I have an excellent relationship with him. I hope my future is here with Como.”
In interviews while on loan at Como, Perrone has admitted his preference for midfielders who set up attacking phases of play, stating that Manchester City’s Ballon d’Or winner of 2024, Rodri is a ‘role model’ for him.
Perrone has also stated this season that the style of play implemented by Cesc Fabregas at Como is similar to that of Pep Guardiola’s at Manchester City in terms of playing with the ball, pressing high up the pitch, and exploiting central spaces on the pitch.
It remains to be seen whether Maximo Perrone will have any future as a City player at all, and perhaps the signing of Nico Gonzalez from FC Porto could spell the end of any such hopes barring a remarkable rise in performances in the coming seasons from the Argentine.
