Kylian Mbappe hogged the headlines with a stunning double to help Real Madrid thrash Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in La Liga.

With the pressure piling up on Los Blancos following a lean patch of three consecutive draws, they responded with a dominant display against the Lions at San Mames.

Mbappe continued his red-hot form after opening the account with a screamer. He controlled Trent Alexander-Arnold’s diagonal ball brilliantly and slalomed past Athletic players before triggering a lethal strike past Unai Simon.

Mikel Jauregizar had an opportunity to equalise after passive defending from the visitors, but Thibaut Courtois palmed away his strike with a stunning save.

Eduardo Camavinga doubled the lead after heading home from close range just before half-time.

Mbappe completed his double with a fiery long-range screamer, leaving no chance for Simon.

The French international has now scored 25 goals and provided four assists in 20 games for Los Blancos this season.

He is the top scorer of both La Liga and the Champions League.

The 26-year-old is also on the verge of breaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for the most goals for Madrid in a calendar year (59 goals in 2013). 

Mbappe has scored 56 goals in 2025 and needs four more in four games to eclipse the Portuguese legend and set a new milestone.

He is well positioned to lift the Pichichi trophy and European Golden Boot for the second consecutive year.

Madrid have now reduced the gap to just one point behind leaders Barcelona and will look to build on the momentum against Celta Vigo this weekend.

They will welcome Manchester City next week in a blockbuster Champions League game.

Mbappe will be rubbing his hands to replicate a masterclass against Pep Guardiola’s side, as he did last season.
