Pelé finished with 12 goals in 14 matches across four editions, and lifted the World Cup three times with Brazil.

Mbappé now has 14 goals from 15 World Cup games and is playing in his third tournament. At 27, he has reached two finals and won the title in 2018.

The all-time list is led by Miroslav Klose with 16 from 24 games, then Ronaldo with 15 from 19, and Gerd Müller on 14 from 13. Lionel Messi has 13 from 26, Just Fontaine 13 from 6, and Pelé 12 from 14.

With at least two more matches guaranteed this edition, Mbappé is two goals from equalling Klose and three from taking the record outright.
