After almost three decades of misery and despair, Scotland qualified for the greatest show on earth with a dramatic win against Denmark in the qualifiers. It was supposed to be a comfortable outing against Haiti in Massachusetts, but the Scotsmen only secured a hard-fought victory, thanks to a deflected first-half goal from John McGinn. They now top Group C, as it finished all square between Brazil and Morocco in the other fixture.

Below are the Scotland players rated in their 1-0 win against Haiti.

Angus Gunn: 7

Had a nervy occasion minutes after McGinn’s goal. Looked more confident with time and was rarely troubled en route to securing a clean sheet in their opening FIFA World Cup fixture.

Aaron Hickey: 6.5

Struggled at times against Ruben Providence and Martin Experience. But the Brentford star balanced his game between attack and defence. Steve Clarke did not risk him for the whole game following an early first-half booking and took him off for Nathan Patterson for the final 15 minutes.

Grant Hanley: 7.5

The experienced Hibernian centre-half made some key blocks, tackles and clearances en route to securing a clean sheet.

Jack Hendry: 7

Did well to partner with Hanley in deep defence. His long ball from the back led to the solitary goal, securing three massive points for the Tartan Army.

Andrew Robertson: 7.5

The Liverpool legend showed his leadership traits with composed defending and occasional overlapping runs. Dealt well with the Caribbean chaos with his positioning and no- nonsense clearances.

Ben Gannon-Doak: 7

Lively down the left with his flair and finesse. Played his part in McGinn’s goal and was a constant threat with his dribbles, cut-insides and crosses. The winger was taken off for his Bournemouth teammate Ryan Christie late in the game.

Scott McTominay: 7

Hit the woodwork early in the game. But the Scotsman was not allowed enough space and time to make down-the-middle runs and operate in the advanced areas of the pitch.

Lewis Ferguson: 7.5

Dominated the duels in the centre of the pitch. Made timely recoveries and interceptions. Often drew fouls, exhibiting his excellent hold-up play.

John McGinn: 8

Showed his physical presence against the energetic Haitians. The experienced midfield ace often switched position to tweak the formation during their defensive display and attacking build-ups. His strike deflected off Jean-Ricner Bellegarde before finding the net around the half-hour mark. Wasted a great scoring opportunity midway through the second half. Made way for Findlay Curtis late in the contest.

Lawrence Shankland: 6.5

Dominated the duels as an outright ‘number 9’ but was unable to test Johny Placide in the Haiti goal. Was replaced by Kenny McLean in the closing minutes, as the gaffer chose to protect the lead with a midfield overload.

Che Adams: 7

Did extremely well with his first touch while receiving Jack Hendry’s long pass and playing it wide for Gannon-Doak moments before McGinn’s goal. Started up top but often operated from a deeper role to contribute to the build-up play. Made way for Lyndon Dykes for the final 15 minutes.

Scotland Subs vs Haiti

Lyndon Dykes: 5.5

Showed his aerial strength in the box, but was not effective enough since replacing Adams.

Ryan Christie: 6

Was engaged in protecting the lead rather than aiming for an insurance goal in the closing minutes.

Nathan Patterson: 6.5

Made a crucial block soon after his introduction. Was engaged in defensive duties as the Grenadiers were desperately seeking an equaliser in the final quarter of the match.

Findlay Curtis: NA

Played too little to warrant a rating.

Kenny McLean: NA
