Scott McTominay has already beaten his personal record for goals scored in a single campaign and is now targeting Napoli legend Marek Hamsik.
The Scotland international netted a brace in a 3-0 win over Empoli on Monday, bringing his goal tally in league games to eight.
It’s already one goal more than he scored in his most prolific season at Manchester United last term, but there are more records the Scotsman is targeting this season.
Former Napoli star Hamsik netted nine times in his first Serie A season at Napoli in 2007 and managed 12 in his most prolific campaigns at the club, in 2009-10 and 2016-17.

At some point, Hamsik even became the best scorer in Napoli’s history, but was then overtaken by Dries Mertens and Lorenzo Insigne in second place.
McTominay has six Serie A games remaining to equal Hamsik’s record in his debut season at Napoli, even if, as reported by Gazzetta and Il Mattino, his main target remains winning the Scudetto as the Partenopei sit second in the Serie A table, just three points below leaders Inter.
“I’ve dreamed of winning trophies and being a champion my whole life. I’ll never lose that feeling until my career is finished,” McTominay said after the Empoli game on Monday.
“We can’t look too far. I’m not getting too carried away with what other teams do. We must focus on ourselves and keep a clear mind.”
