As per Voetbal International reports, Rogier Meijer is in his final months as coach of NEC. The Nijmegen club are not extending the expiring contract of the 43-year-old coach, bringing an end his six seasons at the club.

Meijer started as a youth coach at NEC in 2017, after leaving his boyhood club De Graafschap. In 2019, he was promoted to the first team, where he formed a trio with Adrie Bogers and François Gesthuizen in the 2019-20 season. A year later, Meijer continued on his own and led NEC to promotion to the Eredivisie via the play-offs.

Under Meijer’s leadership, NEC easily stayed at the highest level, but in the years that followed, they failed to meet the high ambitions of the club’s backers. Investor Marcel Boekhoorn has wanted to qualify for Europe with NEC, but so far, that has not been successful.

Last season, Meijer led the club to sixth place in the Eredivisie and the cup final, but was left empty-handed after the play-offs and the final defeat to Feyenoord.

This term, Meijer has come under fire from the fans because of NEC’s disappointing performances.

The club invested heavily in the team, but both the style of play and the results do not reflect as such. After 24 rounds, NEC are in 13th place with only three points more than Sparta Rotterdam.
