One day after Corinthians lost 1-0 to Palmeiras at Neo Química Arena, Memphis addressed his first half penalty miss in the derby.
The Dutch forward stressed the need for a team-mate to guard the penalty spot from interference, adding that he lost balance as he planted his standing foot.
"There were many things going on. We have 11 players on the pitch and need to protect ourselves, normally there should be a player there to protect the spot but there was not. I looked at the spot and it seemed fine, but the turf had already been damaged and when I planted my standing foot I lost my balance," he told Romário TV.
The incident came in the 37th minute of the opening half. Before Memphis began his run up, Andreas Pereira scuffed the penalty mark, and the No 10 slipped and sent the effort well wide. He later accepted responsibility and apologised to supporters on social media.
It was Memphis’s second penalty miss since joining Corinthians, and on both occasions the team were beaten. In May 2025 he attempted a Panenka against Mirassol, only for Walter to save.
With Memphis available, Corinthians host Red Bull Bragantino on Thursday, 12 February at 20:00 at Neo Química Arena in the third round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
