Messi sets unwanted World Cup record after another penalty miss | OneFootball

Already the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history, Lionel Messi entered the record books again during Argentina's last-16 clash with Egypt, although this time for an unwanted reason.

The Inter Miami captain saw his first-half penalty saved by Mostafa Shobeir, marking his second miss from the spot at the 2026 World Cup. Earlier in the tournament, Messi had also failed to convert a penalty against Austria.

The miss leaves the Argentine with eight penalties taken at World Cup finals, scoring four and missing four. No player has ever missed more penalties in the history of the competition, while Messi also became the first footballer to fail from the spot twice in the same World Cup edition.

The save also earned Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir a place in the history books. Having already denied a penalty against Iran during the group stage, he became only the fifth goalkeeper to save two penalties at a single World Cup.

Shobeir joins an exclusive list featuring Jan Tomaszewski (1974), Brad Friedel (2002), Iker Casillas (2002 and 2010) and Wojciech Szczęsny (2022). Despite the penalty miss, Messi recovered to score later in the match and helped inspire Argentina's remarkable comeback victory over Egypt.
