A Mexican women’s league match between Necaxa and Querétaro was briefly halted after noises thought to be gunshots, later judged a false alarm, and play resumed.

The incident happened on Sunday. The referee stopped play as a precaution after sounds outside the ground. The federation said no shooting had taken place and the noise was said to have come from a vehicle.

Players left the pitch and returned to the dressing rooms. The interruption lasted about 15 minutes. Checks followed, calm returned and the match restarted.

The scare echoed previous episodes in Mexico. In August 2011, shots heard outside a stadium sparked panic as fans ran onto the pitch to seek cover.

It also came amid wider security tensions following the death of Nemesio Oseguera, known as 'El Mencho'. Violence has flared in several regions and some fixtures have been postponed as a precaution.
