Micah Richards revealed after the World Cup semi-final broadcast that his father had died, having served as a BBC pundit for the match against Argentina.

The former England, Manchester City and Aston Villa defender was on duty in Atlanta alongside Joe Hart and Wayne Rooney as Thomas Tuchel’s side slipped to a late 2-1 defeat. The player said in a post that he had been told not long before going on air, and that his father Lincoln’s death was unexpected.

Lincoln was his greatest supporter, barely missing a match. He took his son wherever he needed to go in childhood and was a constant, proud presence throughout a professional career that brought 13 England caps.

Watching England at World Cups can bind families across generations, and, as a proud old-school Yorkshireman, Lincoln would have wanted the show to go on.

He was thinking of his siblings and wider family as they remember Lincoln, his hero and inspiration.
