Manchester United parted ways with Ruben Amorim following a breakdown in relations with the club’s top brass.

However, many fans and pundits alike were demanding that he be sacked much earlier, owing to United’s inconsistent performances and underwhelming results.

At the time of his departure, United sat sixth in the Premier League table, 11 points behind third-placed Aston Villa. With Darren Fletcher on the touchline, the Red Devils drew the next game against Burnley and fell to seventh position.

What Manchester United players think about Michael Carrick

Manchester United decided to hand the interim role to Michael Carrick, who has lifted the mood around the club with his management.

United have won five of their six Premier League games under Carrick, whose side will leapfrog Villa into third with a win at Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The upturn in form since the former midfielder’s appointment has led to many fans demanding the club’s hierarchy extend his stay at Old Trafford. It is also believed that United players want the same thing.

According to The Sun, United stars want Carrick to be handed a long-term deal, especially because of his approach, which is drastically different from Amorim’s.

A source told the newspaper: “Michael has come in and done great because he has been a breath of fresh air. Some of the players expected that, because playing for Amorim was like playing chess.

“You had to follow his rules to the tee, whereas Michael has told them to express themselves.”

Further, the former Middlesbrough manager has “really impressed” players at Carrington with his “knowledge of the game.” “He knows about players in other leagues and clearly spends an awful lot of time thinking about football and following it,” the report adds.

Manchester United set their sights on Roberto Martinez

United players know it is not their decision, but the majority would be delighted if Carrick remains in charge of the Premier League giants beyond this season. However, INEOS are yet to make a final decision and continue to explore a number of options for the high-profile role.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez is on United’s list of candidates.

Interestingly, Bruno Fernandes, who plays under Martinez for his country, has allegedly told United bosses that he will leave if Carrick is replaced at the end of the season.
