Boro made it six points from their last two Championship matches with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph at Hillsborough, with Morgan Whittaker’s second goal in successive games enough to get over the line.

This allowed the Riverside outfit to keep pace with league leaders Coventry City, who they now sit just one point behind in the Championship standings.

Although Boro’s dazzling attack has captured many of the headlines so far this season, it was their strong defensive unit that impressed against Wednesday, supported by an excellent midfield pivot of Alan Browne and Hayden Hackney.

Despite picking up another win and further establishing their promotion credentials, the match didn’t come without controversy for the North East side.

During the first half of the clash at Hillsborough, Boro were looking to build on their early lead and establish a further foot hold in the match, when Tommy Conway was brought down in the box by Joe Lumley.

There was clearly contact made and all signs pointed towards a penalty being awarded, however referee Thomas Kirk decided against making a decision and waved play on.

Frustrated at a series of decisions not going in Middlesbrough’s favour, Edwards has revealed when speaking to the NorthernEcho, that he will be making a call to the PGMOL, to discuss why his side, and Conway in particular, have had so many clear penalty claims dismissed.

“I will put a call in, I just will. It's not anything against Tommy. I don't want to make a thing about that either.

"It's been him that's been on the receiving end of them. Tonight was as clear as anything I've ever seen.

"I'm a bit worried about what type of tackle it has to be for TC to get a penalty!"

Conway has scored two goals and provided one assist in 11 Championship starts this season, with his tireless work rate and quality skillset making him a crucial component in Edwards’ side.

Middlesbrough will hope to avoid further penalty drama as they mount a promotion charge

As the Championship season progresses further, it becomes clearer which teams are most likely to be fighting for the promotion-paying positions and those clubs that will be battling to remain in the division.

Edwards’ side firmly fall into the latter category at this moment in time and already have a buffer of six points back to Stoke City in sixth place.

Up next is a home test against Wrexham, which Boro will be targeting as a perfect opportunity to build on their momentum and add another important three points.

Middlesbrough will hope that they can achieve further positive results without the added drama of penalty controversy, because although it ultimately didn’t matter against Wednesday, it could determine the outcome of an important fixture in weeks to come.

Therefore, Edwards’ call to PGMOL may have a constructive outcome and could potentially cause officials to pay closer attention to the decisions they are giving against the North East outfit.
