Having replaced the outgoing Rob Edwards in The Riverside dugout, Swedish boss Kim Hellberg looks eager to stamp his authority on the Boro squad this January.

The Teesside outfit sits in 2nd place, just six points behind Coventry City, and appears to be a good bet for promotion this campaign.

However, Hellberg has been swift in getting bodies in the building this winter to reinforce his squad and really push for promotion, having already confirmed the capture of Chelsea youngster Leo Castledine on a permanent basis.

Castledine shone for Huddersfield Town in the first half of this campaign in League One, scoring ten and assisting twice in 23 games, and now makes the step up to the upper echelons of the Championship.

Boro don't look likely to be stopping there, though, with a busy winter window set to shape them up for the remainder of the campaign, with Hellberg hoping that the business conducted will get them over the line to the top flight.

Following Liverpool's 4-1 home victory over League One outfit Barnsley in the FA Cup on Monday night, it was reported by Pete O'Rourke that scouts from Middlesbrough, Preston North End, and Blackburn Rovers were sent to watch Tykes forward Davis Keillor-Dunn ahead of a potential move.

As per the FLW exclusive, Barnsley are said to be willing to part ways with the 28-year-old this winter in a bid to raise funds at Oakwell, drawing interest from teams in the league above.

Keillor-Dunn has scored 11 goals and grabbed one assist in 21 League One games this season at Barnsley, despite the Tykes' struggles in the division.

Middlesbrough are looking to add more depth and quality in the final third this January, even after the capture of Castledine, with the Barnsley forward emerging as a potential option.

Middlesbrough set to beat Bristol City in race for Aston Villa defender Finley Munroe

It is not just the forward areas which Boro are looking to improve in, though, having seemingly beaten Bristol City to the capture of Aston Villa defender Finley Munroe.

The Teesside outfit have agreed a fee in the region of £300k for the left wing-back, who has shone on loan with League Two Swindon Town in the first half of this campaign, scoring twice and assisting seven in 23 league games.

Swindon boss Ian Holloway has heaped praise on the 20-year-old, who looks set to provide competition with Alex Bangura at left-back, saying: "I don't think I've had as good a full-back in my lifetime. Maybe Seamus Coleman. I think Finn's in the same bracket."

Still young and with ample time to improve, Munroe will make the two-division jump to link up with Hellberg at The Riverside, and bolster the club's option at left-back as they target the Premier League.

Delano Burgzorg and Seny Dieng are likely to depart the club this January

In terms of outgoings, it looks almost certain that attacker Delano Burgzorg and goalkeeper Seny Dieng will be leaving the club this January.

Burgzorg has attracted attention from Bristol City this window, who are said to be frontrunners for the Surinamese's signature.

The former Huddersfield Town man has made 22 league appearances for Boro this season, scoring once and assisting three times, though looks set to make way for new arrivals this winter.

Dieng has been heavily linked with a move to Hull City this January, with the EFL approving the free transfer of the Senegalese shot-stopper, as per HullLive.

However, a stumbling block in the deal has emerged, with Dieng looking for a payout by Boro to leave the club, as per Alan Nixon, with his £25,000-a-week wages proving to be a problem yet to be solved.

Whether Boro and Dieng can come to an agreement this winter remains to be seen, but the former QPR keeper, who hasn't played a competitive game since December 2024, is clearly unwanted on Teesside, and Boro remain keen to shift his wages to facilitate the arrival of new players.
