Mike Maignan saved a penalty at the start of the second half on Friday against Norway in World Cup Group I. It was France's first World Cup penalty save since Joël Bats in 1986.
L'Équipe reports that he had been criticised earlier in the tournament, notably for passivity against Senegal.
Jörgen Strand Larsen's attempt in the 50th minute was tame and mid-height. Maignan still had to dive the right way, and he did.
The penalty followed an avoidable foul by Théo Hernandez, his former Milan team-mate.
The former Lille goalkeeper has a strong record from the spot. In 1986 Joël Bats denied Zico in the quarter-final against Brazil in Guadalajara, a tie that finished 1-1 after extra time and 4-3 on penalties.
