Mikel Arteta reveals 'constant' Arsenal transfer contact in fresh Fabio Vieira hint

Wolves star Matheus Cunha latest to be linked with January move to Gunners

Mikel Arteta says he is in “constant contact” with Arsenal’s owners as the club try to bring in a forward before the end of the January transfer window.

The Gunners are on the hunt for attacking reinforcements after Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus suffered injuries.

Arteta has confirmed the club are trying to get someone in before the transfer window shuts on February 3 and he is in dialogue with Arsenal’s owners.

Co-chair Josh Kroenke is currently in the UK after flying in from the US at the start of this week and he is set to attend Wednesday’s Champions League with Dinamo Zagreb at Emirates Stadium.

“We are in constant contact, obviously - understanding the situation, how the team is evolving,” said Arteta.

“Obviously, some of the big news that we had, unfortunately, they weren’t that positive. How we’re feeling about it, they’ve been super supportive and they continue to be so.”

Asked if the owners are prepared to back him this month, Arteta added: “First of all, it’s backing the club and themselves, you know, because we all want the best.

“The decision that we make is not to back anybody, it’s just something that makes sense, that is going to improve the squad, that is going to give us the ability to perform to a level and to win the things that we want to do. If that’s the case and we have the resources to do it, we will try.”

Arsenal have been linked with a range of forwards during the current transfer window, the latest of those being Wolves star Matheus Cunha.

Arteta insists the speculation around players being linked to the club does not affect him and he is able to block it out.

“I understand it happens,” he said. “In the summer I had a lot of people texting me saying: ‘You’re after him?’

“And sometimes I don't even know what they’re talking about. I don’t follow that too much, I have enough work to do and we’ve got a lot of things on so I don’t get too distracted by it.”

Arsenal are light on forward options in attack and Arteta hinted on Tuesday the club could recall midfielder Fabio Vieira from his loan at Porto, if they are unable to get anyone in this month.

“There were certain possibilities with the Fabio situation,” he said. “We’re exploring all of the things that we can do, just in case we cannot do them as well, how the injuries are progressing and when we’re going to have them available.”
