Milan have a fresh injury concern on their hands after Santiago Gimenez was forced off during Mexico’s World Cup defeat to England.

The striker suffered a right ankle problem in the closing stages of the last-16 tie at the Azteca, which the hosts lost 3-2 as England, despite finishing with ten men, booked a quarter-final against Erling Haaland’s Norway.

Introduced at the hour mark, Gimenez was hurt by an awkward movement of his right ankle, notably without any contact from England’s Djed Spence, and had to leave the field during Mexico’s late push before heading to hospital for tests.

Gimenez ankle injury a worry for Milan given recent history & transfer uncertainty

According to Mexican media, via Sky Sport, those examinations ruled out any fracture and diagnosed a sprain, a relatively encouraging outcome, but one that lands on an ankle with recent history.

It is the same joint the forward had operated on last December, having been sidelined for five months last season by a problem in the area. On that occasion, he underwent an arthroscopic cleanup in Amsterdam after initially opting for conservative treatment.

With Gimenez a Milan player and Ruben Amorim only arriving in the city on Monday to begin his rebuild, the last thing the Rossoneri need is a lingering issue for one of their forwards.

The immediate news could be worse, no break, but the recurrence on a previously operated ankle is one Milan’s medical staff will want to assess closely once he returns.
