Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar, formerly of Benfica, has reflected on his Champions League error after Antonín Kinský’s difficult night.
The young goalkeeper was substituted early against Atlético Madrid after conceding three goals in the opening minutes.
"Something similar happened to me eight years ago. I also made a mistake on my Champions League debut and I needed a few years to get over it. I feel sorry for him, but I have seen him play several times and, in my opinion, he will be a great goalkeeper. This incident will only help him reach that level," he told Sky Sport Italia.
Svilar’s reference was his Benfica debut in the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League against Manchester United, coached by José Mourinho, at Estádio da Luz. The goalkeeper misjudged a wide free-kick and, trying to gather, carried the ball over the line for the only goal in a 1-0 defeat.
Visibly shaken at full time, Svilar was consoled on the pitch by several players, including compatriot Romelu Lukaku.
Now with Roma, the Belgian has played 36 matches this season, 28 in Serie A, seven in the Europa League and one in the cup. Across 3,240 minutes he has conceded 29 goals, and he has been praised recently by Daniele De Rossi.
