Mircea Lucescu, 80, could undergo surgery as early as Tuesday in Bucharest, the university hospital SUUB said.

He fainted on Sunday 29 March at the national team’s training camp and has remained in hospital since.

He then suffered two heart attacks on Friday 3 April while preparing to be discharged, and was moved to intensive care on Sunday 5 April.

A medical meeting was held on Monday, joined by a Romanian cardiologist based in France at the family’s request. He was fitted with a defibrillator this week.

Current treatment is being continued and judged satisfactory. His condition will be reviewed on Tuesday, when an invasive option, mechanical circulatory support known as ECMO, could be considered.
