Sam Allardyce joked that he would have looked to sign Mo Salah for Bolton after the forward announced he was leaving Liverpool.

Mo Salah has confirmed he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season after nine brilliant years with the Anfield club.

The forward joined the Reds in 2017, and he has gone on to win every domestic trophy for Liverpool, as well as a Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

With Salah integral to Liverpool’s success in this period, he will undoubtedly go down as one of their greatest ever players, and the final months of the campaign will give the fans a chance to show what the Egyptian international means to them.

However, even though Salah has announced he is departing the Merseyside outfit, he is not retiring from the game, with the 33-year-old still clearly feeling he has a lot to offer.

At the moment, it’s unclear where Salah will be playing his football next season, although there has been plenty of speculation since his announcement, even if a decision isn’t likely to be communicated until the summer.

And, taking to Instagram, former Bolton boss Sam Allardyce joked that he would’ve made a push to sign Salah had he still been in charge of the Trotters, even if he knew it would be a long shot, along with a mock-up photo showing him presenting the forward with a Wanderers shirt with his name on the back.

Fancy a season with the Wanderers, Mo? Not sure even I could’ve persuaded him, but I would’ve definitely tried,” along with a laughing emoji.

During his time in charge of Bolton, Allardyce developed a reputation for signing high-profile players coming towards the end of their careers, but they would often make big contributions to the club.

Youri Djorkaeff, Ivan Campo, Fernando Hierro and Jay-Jay Okocha were just some of the well-known names who surprised the football world by turning up at Bolton.

Whilst there were a few failures for Wanderers, it was a transfer approach that generally paid off in style, with those four players becoming firm favourites with the Bolton support.

Furthermore, it was the most successful era for Bolton in their modern history, as Allardyce took the club back to the Premier League, established them in the top flight, as well as delivering European football and reaching a cup final.

Bolton Wanderers will hope to bring back the Sam Allardyce days in the future

This is a light-hearted message from Allardyce, but, from what we know about the former England boss, it wouldn’t have been a surprise if he had put a phone call into Salah’s agent after the news broke!

He had a real ability to get buy-in from players who had played at the highest level, and whilst some deals didn’t work out, he brought some incredibly talented individuals to Bolton over the years.

Obviously, Bolton slowly fell off after Allardyce departed, with serious financial issues putting them on the brink as they ultimately dropped to League Two.

But, there is a more positive outlook at the club now, and the aim for Steven Schumacher is to win promotion this season, with the Trotters looking nailed on for a play-off place.

In the long-term, the objective will be to return to the Premier League and eventually try to replicate the great days they had under Allardyce.
