Mo Salah will be devastated as Liverpool reject Jurgen Klopp 2.0

Mohamed Salah won't be happy after Liverpool rejected a coach hoping to be Jurgen Klopp 2.0.

Mo Salah didn’t hold back on what he thinks of this Liverpool team in a social media post at the weekend. The Egyptian spoke out on a drop of standards and called for a return to the ideas of Jurgen Klopp’s ‘heavy metal’ football.

"Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve,” he wrote. "I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies.

"That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good. It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it."

Now, no one would correctly describe Arne Slot’s football as ‘heavy metal’. It’s been quite the opposite this season as a blunt Liverpool team struggled to compete with intensity.

So it’ll be devastating for Salah to hear that Xabi Alonso, a readily available candidate for Liverpool, plans on adapting Chelsea to that style of football. Per the Athletic, The Spaniard reportedly told the Blues that he wants a team of ‘mentality monsters’ - a direct Jurgen Klopp quote.

Liverpool, though, passed up on hiring Alonso in order to persist with Slot. It’s a controversial decision and one that will be under heavy scrutiny next season.

Salah will move on, of course, and continue his career elsewhere. But it seems he won’t see a return of ‘heavy metal’ football anytime soon. Not at Liverpool, anyway.

Mo Salah: Situation Summary

Liverpool Outburst and Slot Friction

As of 19 May 2026, Mohamed Salah has plunged Liverpool into controversy following a scathing social media statement. Following a 4–2 defeat at Aston Villa on 15 May—where he was used as a late substitute—the 33-year-old demanded a return to Jürgen Klopp's "heavy metal" football. In what has been widely interpreted as a direct attack on Arne Slot's tactics, Salah criticised the team's "crumbling" form and stated the club's identity must be permanently recovered.

Confirmed Summer Departure

Salah’s time at Anfield is officially coming to an end, with Liverpool confirming a farewell mosaic is planned for him after Sunday's final match against Brentford. Having agreed to mutually terminate his contract a year early, he will leave as a free agent this June. Fenerbahçe have reportedly offered him a three-year contract, while interest from the Saudi Pro League remains high.
